Cam and Kelsey are chasing their dreams, creating their own travel visions and making us all types of jealous in the process. Currently in Costa Rica surfing, sunning and planning their next destination, the duo tracked down a Xueller roundie sat down to answer some of our very pressing travel questions!
Thanks for chatting with us and giving us insights into your envious lives!
When did you both decide to start your extended travel and what prompted the ‘leave it all behind’ attitude?
Cam and I hopped around a few countries in Europe for our month-long honeymoon back in May 2016 and I guess something just sparked in us. When we got home and went right back to our lives, we both just started to realize how unhappy we were being comfortable. By that, I mean we both had great careers, we lived in a nice home, we drove nice cars and had a sick Harley Davidson, and never had anything to worry about when it came to paying the bills. But that routine lifestyle just wasn't for us. So we immediately started researching ways to make traveling the world our full-time careers. In June 2016 we started saving as much money as possible with plans to leave September 2017. Well, in August we decided it wasn't soon enough. On September 6, 2016 we told our friends and family that we would be selling everything we own to travel the world, and the support we received was amazing! We continued to prepare and save for the next few months, and officially left everything behind on December 4, 2016.
How are you able to keep track of all the expenses?
To be completely honest, everything is still so new to us. We are trying to figure out more and more ways to make money and keep track of expenses. But, it's all apart of the adventure! We try to travel as budget friendly as possible, but we saved enough money to last us at least the first year of travel without having to worry about bringing in extra money. When it comes to expenses, I keep track of everything with our bank statements, as well as keeping all receipts from cash purchases.
Packing with no definitive return date must have been fun! How did you manage to pack lightly?
Packing for the rest of our lives was... interesting. Haha. It was harder for me than it was for Cam, of course. But it actually wasn't as difficult as I thought it was going to be! The fact that I've always maintained a pretty basic style and the whole capsule wardrobe fad made things super easy. I just stuck with solid color tops, a few pairs of jeans and shorts, my basic Chuck Taylors, black multi-terrain Vans, and a pair of Rainbows, as well as a pair of running shoes and a couple pairs of workout clothes. We also like to trade stuff out when we pick up new sponsors, or if we find a good deal somewhere.
How do you both stay healthy and fit while traveling?
Health and fitness has been a big part of both of our lives. Cam was a competitive wrestler his whole life, and I was a competitive gymnast and cheerleader until college. With that being said, staying healthy and fit comes pretty naturally to us. But, that's not to say we don't have to work for it. Cam surfs almost everyday and I try to exercise or do yoga everyday. We always try to eat pretty healthy and don't spend our money on snacks or junky food too often. We also walk A TON, and we don't drink very much alcohol (which honestly kind of sucks because we both love beer haha). But it helps save money, so it's all good!
Do you have any advice for couples (or singles for that matter!) wanting to escape the mundane routine and follow their travel dreams?
My advice for anyone and everyone is just to follow your dreams! Don't keep working that job you absolutely hate. Don't keep surrounding yourself with people that tell you it's impossible to make your dreams a reality. We are living proof of it! Sacrifice some fun for bit and save as much money as possible, sell all of your stuff, and go somewhere gnarly! Live the rest of your life following your dreams, and you will never regret it!
Was there anything that caught you off guard that you didn’t realise would be an impact before you left?
I would say the one thing that caught us off guard was how difficult it was to leave our families. We knew it would be hard saying "goodbye", but I don't think either of us expected it to be so emotionally draining. I'm going to be honest, I pretty much cried every single day the week leading up to our departure. Not because I didn't want to go, but because I truly didn't know how long it would be until the next time I saw my family. But everyone was so supportive, and we all promised to try and talk a few times a week- if not everyday. It's been working out great so far!
What has been your best memory from your abroad experience so far, and for what reason?
Wow. My best memory... That's a really tough one! But if I had to choose, I think I would say the road trips throughout Iceland. I'm very anxious in a car and Iceland is very, well, icy haha. So, I was pretty much freaking out every time we were driving. But, I saw the most beautiful sights I have ever seen, and I sat in a car while cam drove during the gnarliest blizzard on the highest part of this epic mountain top. I was scared for my life the whole time haha, but it was the craziest thing ever. Not gunna lie though, I don't think I will ever do that road tip again during the dead of winter. Too much for me haha. One time was enough. But, I recommend it to everyone!
Where to next?!?! What’s the next adventure you’re taking your Xueller roundie on?
THAILAND! We are going to freaking Thailand! I am seriously so beyond stoked about this next chapter in our journey. Cam and I will be basing ourselves out of Thailand, whilst traveling Southeast Asia for the remainder of the year. On April 20th we will begin our journey with a couple of friends, in search of the most epic and untouched waves as well as providing local villages with clean water. And you best believe I'm taking my Xueller roundie to every single beach we go to!
I hope you guys are stoked to follow us around! And again, thank you so much for letting us be apart of the Xueller family. <3
